Welcome!
A new year has begun, and we are excited to bring a special feature, the “SPOTLIGHT”, where we share insights into the amazing things happening at our school. The “SPOTLIGHT” also highlights the innovative, effective teaching and learning at BRS, and endeavors to create a platform where readers can freely express their interests and thoughts within this shared community.
IT"S BEEN A BUSY START,
AND EVERY NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES.
Priorities for 2023
It is wonderful to see we have finally reached a new normal at BRS, despite the challenges our community has faced in the past three years.
In this 2023 March issue, we start off with some general updates from the BRS senior leadership on the school"s priorities for the year ahead. Among them are:
The Commitment to Student-Centered Education
The Consistent Emphasis on Quality Teaching
Intercultural Understanding and LinguisticCompetence
Students" Holistic Development
We hope the entire BRS community enthusiastically embraces all the challenges and opportunities that the new year will bring.
The Results are in:
Class of 2023 Admission Highlights
Over the past months, many students from the Class of 2023 received their acceptance letters from top ranked colleges and universities around the world. It has been an impressive start to an exciting admissions cycle for the Class of 2023. We are so proud of them and will share the highlights of their acceptances.
The above list does not include acceptances for all students, as they continue to receive acceptance from universities with differing timelines.
Ignite Students" Passion in Math
As we look back on the application results of the Class of 2023, we also take a closer look at our 2nd annual DESMOS that was held on March 14th, 2023. DESMOS is a highly anticipated exhibition of interdisciplinary projects. It"s also evidence of how our student-centered approaches support students to achieve ideal learning outcomes while allowing students to be actively involved in making their own educational choices.
The exhibition provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned about math through inquiry-based projects. 17 teams from our Junior-high school exhibited their projects to a community of teachers, fellow students and staff, showcasing their mastery of a host of skills, such as logic and reasoning, imagination, creativity, symmetry and balance, as well as solid collaboration and communication skills.
Our students are bold in their thinking, and creative in their instincts.
Well done Junior-high students and teachers!
The idea of presenting math knowledge in the form of art is actually not new to BRS students. BRS senior-high student Yuan also stunned us with her creative math homework.
An Excerpt from Yuan"s Homework
In her animation, Yuan depicts the empirical rule, a mathematical concept, and she hopes that her animation will also bring awareness to the Otocolobus manul, a Grade 2 National protected animal that is difficult to breed in captivity and has a low survival rate.
Students at BRS are encouraged to present what they have learned in math class in a way that they are good at or enjoy, whether it is with drawings or even music. Our students are able to use their imagination in the learning process, drawing on their personal specialties and breaking the traditional learning model. Not only was this unconventional mode of learning not questioned, but they are given more encouragement to explore and decide what suits them best.
As a result, students develop deeper content knowledge and joyful learning experiences, thriving in the learning environment provided here at BRS.
Celebrating Women"s Day with BRS
This month at BRS also features an amazing flash mob activity onInternational Women"s Day, and a WeChat post sharing the stories of eight enthusiastic and dedicated faculty and staff members of BRS. Through their commitment to BRS these teachers and staff members have gained valuable life and teaching experiences. If you"re interested in their stories, the best thing you can do is click on this link.
BRS has a happy, close-knit faculty. The leaders of BRS put a lot of effort and resources into the attraction, development and retention of outstanding teachers, because they know how important good teaching is to students.
We hope you enjoyed reading this first issue of SPOTLIGHT. Please stay tuned to this series for more on interesting topics.
