as Language B option
Students at ISNS come from many different countries and speak many different languages. There three major languages programs offered at ISNS:
English Language and Literature (Language A) ; English Language Acquisition (Language B).
Mandarin as host country language, Language and Literature, and Language Acquisition
French as Language B option
To find out the language pathways we offer and how each language is taught through PYP to DP years. This week, we interviewed the Head of Department for the world language, Martine Lusignan to give us a full overlook of the French Program offered at ISNS. Some of the Grade 11 students have also talked about French from their perspectives.
The French Program
ISNS offers French in MYP and DP, it starts in Grade 6. The students also have the option to join French in Grade 9 andthey might not have the same language acquisition as the ones started in G6. However, by the end of the program, they will be able to have conversations in French.
Phase one
In the French program, there are two major components. The first one is language acquisition and the second one is culture. When students are starting in Grade 6, they don"t know the language yet and we call that phase one.
Phase two & Phase three
As they"re learning French from grade 6to grade 10, they usually move from phase one to phase two then to phase three, each phase takes approximately two years.
The standard level or the high standard level
By the time our studentsstart DP, they are usually ready to start DP in French B. French B is offered in two different levels: the standard level or the high standard level. Usually, DP program students at ISNS are learning the standard level.
Phase four
Currently our Grade11students are in their phase four, theycan communicate in French, read and write pretty much anything in French. If students start French in Grade 9, they will probably be in the beginner level. These students will completephase two by the end of Grade 12.
French is fun
The connection between MYP and DP is a very clear progression
“
We are looking at the topics, the competencies, the skills and the content.
Examples for you
to understand
1
The topics in grade six, students will start learning about daily life conversation and interactions such as presenting yourself and talking about your daily life. As they gradually learn more from Grade 8 to 10, they start learning about things that are more complex and abstract.
2
In Grade 10, studentslearn about the international French culture. Theywill read a book called “Le petit prince (The little prince)” and they will learn to talk about their own life in the future and the past.
In terms of content
Student starts to learn French with simple sentences. As we know French is complex, and the first thing that students need to know is vocabulary and the present tense. As they are becoming more and more confident with the vocabulary, they will learn the basic sentence structure. They start to go deeper into the grammar. Verb conjugation and sentence structure are the things we focus on throughout the entire program. It is just the nature of the French language.
In terms of competencies
Students are assessed in MYP on four different competencies:two are receptive and two are productive. They will produce written and oral text and they will also read and listen. Then when the four competencies are mastered, students will move on to DP and add one more competency, which is interactive. That is their final oral assessment, which is a conversation of10-15 minutes with the teacher.
Each year grade 6 to grade 10 students are workingactively and explicitly on the same Approaches to learning (ATLs) to deepen their skills. From Grade6to 10 for example,we work on communicationas the first ATL of the year. After that, every year they get better at itthroughout the French program in MYP, students will learn to develop all their ATL skills, which are research skills, thinking skills, self-management skills, communication skills and social skills. Students learn about the French community
which is an international community. They learn to be curious and interested in other cultures. This is such an important part of the IB program at ISNS.
We have a very vibrant but small French program community. Students feel safe and they are here to engage with the teacher and other students. They develop their social skills, their communication skills but more than that they developed this ideathat we live in a global world, and they are becoming more open-minded citizens.
“Tips to learn French
“To learn French, one of the first thingsis to be interested in the language. We usually learn French through oral, it would be to get familiar with the sounds, listening to music and maybe listening to people speaking French. Another thing is try to readand be curious about the words that you can pick upfrom another language or a sentence structure. I think that learning French is all about being curious and being interested in something that you don"t know.”
